Halloween Fun

Halloween is one of the most fun celebrations of the year. On Halloween Day, many people play games like Trick or Treat, Donut, Eating Race, Mummy Wrap, What's in the Bowl, Bobbing for Apples, Pin the Wart on the Witch, Find the Pumpkin and plenty more games.
Mummy Wrap is a enjoyable game where two teams get one toilet paper roll. A team member has to roll the toilet paper from head to toe on another team member. Once the roll is fully used and the other team member is completely covered like a mummy, then the mummy has to run to the cross line and finish the game. Whichever team member crosses the line first is the winner. Another exciting game is the "Donut Eating Race" where few people try to eat a donut fast. Whoever eats the donut first then that person is the winner. Trick or Treat is one of the most important events on Halloween Day where children go to people’s houses and collect some goodies like candies. Finding pumpkins is a very easy game and just like the name you have to find hidden pumpkins and if you find the pumpkin then you can get grand prizes.
Another fun thing to do on Halloween Day is making recipes like Chocolate Halloween Mice, Vampire Cookies, Chocolate spiders and many more recipes. These kinds of recipes can be done at home with family and friends or can be purchased at a store.
Peoples like to wear different kinds of costumes to dress up to enjoy Halloween Day. Many people wear scary costumes because Halloween is all about celebrating spirits. These kind of things are very fun in Halloween days .

EFPS'S 7th Annual Pumpkin Decorating

As a member of the news club I got the chance to talk to Ms. Piwowarek and ask her questions about our annual pumpkin decorating festivity.  In case you do not know about E.F.P.S decorating event, it consists of every class decorating a pumpkin. The pumpkins are not carved; instead students opt for painting and gluing construction paper.

How did we get our pumpkins?
Ms. P shared that the students from the junior/intermediate community classes walked to Canadian Tire and picked out the pumpkins for our school. If it weren’t for our community class there would be no pumpkins to decorate.

How long has our school been participating in this activity?
“Our school has been doing it for 6 years and this will be the 7th year. Our pumpkin decorating event is an annual occurrence at E.F.P..” shared Ms. Piwowarek.

When do all the classes give in there pumpkins?
“This upcoming Friday which is October 30th, the night before Halloween.”

Why does our school decorate pumpkins?
“Our school does the pumpkin decorating festivity because it's a  great class and school spirit activity. All the kids enjoy doing it and it’s fun to see all the unique creations.”  As well being a student at Ellen Fairclough my whole life decorating the pumpkins is extremely fun.

Our school is quite creative have you ever seen any pumpkin that blew your mind?
Ms. Pivorweak shared that “last year had amazing pumpkins, they were super-cool” as she explained she said with excitement “they all blew my mind”!

Interview Ms.Ijaz

As a grade 8 student I got the opportunity to interview a teacher, I had chosen

Ms.Ijaz because she was my history and geography teacher and had joined the

junior/intermediate division. There is no doubt that she is a familiar face, she has

been a supply teacher here at E.F.P.S also teacher Grade 1/2 teacher last year.

Although she was teacher at our school, I didn’t know much about her and so I asked

her a couple of questions.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? She explained that growing up she always

wanted to inspire others and one outlet to inspire was becoming a teacher.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?  Ms.Ijaz had shared the best part of

teaching is getting to know the kids, and there personalities. Every kid is different

and they have different things to share and offer. When teaching she said she was

able to allow kids to explore the world.

What opportunities have come from teaching? With full excitement she had said she

got the chance to explore. Ms.Ijaz had got to go to Taiwan, she learned how others

from another country got to learn. Teaching in Canada and teaching in Taiwan was

the same, the eagerness for all the kids to learn was the same.

If you were not a teacher what would you be? “ I would enjoy becoming a graphic

designer”

What have you enjoyed so far being a grade 6/7 teacher?  Ms.Ijaz had shared that it

has been a great start; everyday she learns something new from each student. From

teacher to student they all learn together. Since Ms.Ijaz is teaching a 6/7 she said

that she gives more guidance because of them being so independent.

If you could pick one or two grades to teach what would it be? Ms.Ijaz shared that

she would enjoy to teach grade 4 or 8. The reason for grade 8 was because she could

help them prepare for high school and life skills. For grade 4 she stated that grade 4

would be a transition year. Grade 4 students would become a junior and teaching

methods are different and so Ms.Ijaz would like to guide them into the right path.

Halloween Safety Tips

Every year children look forward to certain Days such as Easter, Canada Day, Christmas Day and etc. Among the many Days, children love to dress up as their favorite hero or someone they admire and go out door to door to get many treats as they can on Halloween Day. However, it is very important to make sure that safety is met in order for children to have fun.

Here are some guidelines for parents and children to follow.

Choose the right costumes
  • Choose a costume that is suitable for the weather that will protect your child from the cold or wet weather.
  • If you choose a mask, make sure your child will be able to see clearly and to also be able to breath easily.
  • Before you use face paint or any type of make-up, make sure you test it before to avoid your child from any allergic reactions.

                                           Avoid danger when decorating
  • Keep candles, lighters and other fire items away from your children.
  •  Don’t put fire items nearby curtains, window sills.
  • Check all decorate lights so that they do not overload extension cords.

Stay secure while trick or treat
  • Tell your child to cross the road carefully. Make sure they look to both sides and never crossed between parked cars.
  • Tell your child to go to people who turned on their outside light also don’t go inside peoples homes or cars.

Be cautions with candy and toy
  • Check toy items. If your child is less than 3 years old do not allow them to play with that toy.
  • Don’t eat candy that is open or before your parents check it.

The above are few safety tips for your child to follow in order to have a fun experience while they are trick or treating. However, make sure they don’t eat anything until they get home so that you can check all their goodies. Mom and dad as parents you may want have first picks at Halloween goodies. Let’s also not forget about the Halloween pumpkins, if you put candles inside the pumpkin then you need to put them in a safe place.

Toronto FC

The Toronto FC is also known as Toronto’s Football Club. Even though they may not be as popular as The Blue Jays or The Raptors they still have quite a few fans and followers with their YouTube channel at 11,000 subscribers. For a while they were doing quite well in the series and they still had a confident start to the game on Thursday even though they had a very disappointing loss against the Montreal Impact on Sunday with a score of 2-0.

If they beat the Montreal Impacts they would have been able to advance into the Eastern Conference semi-finals, but unfortunately that’s not how the game ended. Within the first 38 minutes of the game the Montreal Impact scored all three goals of the game and the first half was the worst one the team has possibly ever seen. Last Sunday Didier Drogba managed to easily score two easy goals while our weak position could not hold back the defence.

Everyone expected the team to learn from their mistakes and win this game at the least, but the Montreal Impact had an even better game than on Sunday. As the hopes of advancing were quickly dashed the team’s CEO along with everyone else who supports the team has decided that the team needs and improvement on the defensive portion and to still keep their main focus on offense. The team manager admits that he is embarrassed at the team’s loss and that it was not something that he and the team would be able to cope with. So even though we still lost this right after the Blue Jays were knocked out the team still stepped in and gave it everything that they could.

Toronto Blue Jays

After being very close to elimination twice the Blue Jays are just one game away from the American championship series. Last game they beat the Texas Rangers 8-4 and then the score was at 2 games for both sides. This next game will be the fifth one and will decide if we move on to the playoffs. This would be the first time they have been to the playoffs in the past 22 years even though they have never actually won the series.

Game 5 will be happening this Wednesday (or today depending on when you are reading this), at around 4:00 PM ET time. (All this will be happening at the Rogers Centre). This will be the fifth game against the Texas Rangers and the one that will break the tie between the two teams so don’t miss it!
Last game one of our pitchers named David Price threw 50 pitches in 3 innings to give up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Then after Aaron Sanchez and Roberto Osuna finished it off for the Blue Jays. In the end the past game was an overall win for the Blue Jays and then both teams were tied at two wins.
The Toronto manager; John Gibbons says that we may be looking at a spot in the playoffs, but we shouldn’t get too excited or overly confident.
There is a lot of clamor online about the Blue Jays on Twitter and Facebook and predictions on their future performances. Blue Jays fans have taken over social media and are using it to cheer on the Blue Jays on their road to the playoffs and hopefully a complete win. On social media I mentioned that many people are making predictions about the outcome of the game and there is some trending foreshadowing that game 5 may end up like game 2, but I will leave it to you to figure out what the other fans mean by that.

World Teacher Day

October 5th, 2015 was World Teacher’s Day. There is no doubt that teachers play an essential role in students lives.

If students have the potential to unlock the promises for the future, it is no surprise that teachers are the key. World’s teacher day is acknowledged globally and October 5th is meant to represent all the efforts that teachers have made towards building sustainable societies.

World teacher’s day was created in 1994, to commemorate the dedication of teachers to help educate students. Our teachers at Ellen Fairclough guide our students, support them, inspire and educate. Great job teachers!

Welcome Back To EFPS 2015-16

Staff and students; welcome to another year at Ellen Fairclough! It's great to see so many new and familiar faces. For those of you who are new to the school; welcome to EFPS, the home of the Fairclough Falcons! There is no doubt that this year will be an amazing year, but some changes have been made in our staff members. First off, let's take a moment to congratulate Mrs. Girdler. She has received a promotion and now is a vice principal in a school in Aurora! Although she left this school for the better, she will be missed. This is also the first year that we don't have Mr. Nolson or Mrs. Partch; they both retired at the end of last year. Now that they retired, we have new staff members filling in their roles.

We have Ms. Weir, teaching the junior and intermediate community class. "I am coming from Highgate PS and I have been  teaching for 9 years; this school seems like the best fit I've ever had in my teaching career." Ms. Weir stated. It's great to have you, Ms. Weir.

We also have another new arrival. Welcome, Ms. Andani! Ms. A is the newest member of our support staff. "The students here are very focused and polite" she said. Ms. Andani has a passion for music and loves to exercise. Welcome to Fairclough Ms. Andani

Some staff members that were already here have changed their teaching roles. For example, Mr. Andersen will now be teaching music. "Music is fun! I've wanted to teach music for a very long time. It's like a dream come true" he said. This year in music, things will be changing, more music will be in the hands of the students, students will have more control over their learning and more importantly, the room will be loud! This year, music will be exceptional!

Ms. Ijaz is now teaching history and geography to intermediate students. :Teaching intermediate students is a very interesting as they have more experience. I can connect and joke around with them a lot more" says Ms. Ijaz. Ms. Ijaz's favorite songs are Life of the Party and Tell the Truth. Her favorite movie is The Dark Knight from the Batman series, which is her favorite of all time.

That brings us to Mr. Pimentel who is teaching the junior and intermediate science. "It's somewhat nerve wracking, the last time I took science was in my first year at university. I like to teach intermediates though as they get my sarcasm and I can relate to them" he said. One of Mr. P favorite subjects that he enjoys teaching, is math. He is also a big fan of the Batman trilogies.

So far, this year has started really well! We have many new faces and many new friends. I know it's weird to say this when only 2 weeks has gone by since school started, but I can't wait for the rest of the year to come! It's going to be a blast!
